I don't care if you're in Atlanta or Albania.. New York or New Zealand.... the flipped finger is understood everywhere.  Of course the Italians have their own unique way of sending the same message.. just ask any dago to show you.  Sometimes the flipped finger is sent with a laugh or a smile.. however, other times it's given as a substitute for a fist to the face, or worse.  I've used the single-finger-salute many, many times.. especially where it's really not a good idea -- to some asshole in traffic.
